The state owned Portugal Pousadas Group began in the 1940's when the first regional Pousada was created. These beautiful hotels, often in superb locations, offer the visitor a sense of history, culture, tradition as well as regional hospitality and cuisine.
The concept of the group is the restoration of the national architectural heritage, in order to guarantee its preservation, and to increase the supply of first class accommodation.
The Pousadas are uniquely Portuguese and represent the very best that Portugal has to offer. They are synonymous with elegant, luxurious accommodation with great attention to detail, exceptional service and a warm welcome.
There are now over 40 hotels located throughout mainland Portugal, two in the Acores and one in Brazil. They are located in some of the most beautiful areas and reflect the best traditions of the regions in which they are located.
They offer a rich variety of choice and include historic castles, former monasteries, palaces and convents always in idyllic locations whether it be historic cities or rural areas of outstanding natural beauty or interest.
The Portugal Pousadas are classified into 4 groups - Historic, Historic Design, Nature and Charm Pousadas.
